Welcome to the November Newsletter from Bonsai4me!
The Heathrow Show at the beginning of October was a huge event with record numbers of visitors. Congratulations to all of those exhibiting trees, trading or quite simply taking the time to attend to make such a success of this event.
The Bonsai4me team were there of course, alongside Karen from ProBio Carbon and we had a very busy day of trading, meeting people and talking bonsai.
The last ‘big’ event of the growing season, here’s looking forward to 2024!

Buxus sempervirens/Box bonsai, 2009 to 2023
Collected from a riverbank the day before my daughter was born, this tree has always been known as 'Alice’s Tree'. I’ve just written an article on the development of its deadwood over the years for Esprit Bonsai and thought I’d share the before-and-after image here.
There seems to be a huge demand for me to write magazine articles at the moment with two new articles submitted this month for Esprit Bonsai as well as a big new article on growing Olives in Northern Europe submitted to Bonsai Focus. |
Some good news regarding trees ‘lost’ during the heat of 2022
Some ‘dead’ trees may in fact survive the heat of summer 2022. There are a few reports of trees finally budding out having been bare all season.
Certainly, I have a pyracantha that dropped all of its leaves at midsummer, and seems to have managed to root itself again, leaf out and even come into flower, 4 months late in September.
I also have a favourite hawthorn that attempted to come into leaf this Spring and stalled. It has sat there in my polytunnel all growing season and despite dropping its set of tiny leaves in August, the cambium on all of the tertiary branches is still green. My hope is that the tree has spent the year re-establishing its rootball and will successfully recover next Spring.
So please check carefully that your tree is truly dead before throwing it away!

Workshops
The B4me team returned to Beechfield Bonsai in Telford in late October for another workshop.
The crunch of the cost-of-living crisis still continues to have an effect on the number of participants we receive at workshops, but those that came were able to benefit from the lower numbers with a huge amount of work carried out on the day.
As ever, there were also many beautiful trees at the nursery for us to look at!

I can’t resist posting a pic of my Acer palmatum, a bonsai I started from a small rooted cutting 20 years ago, now turning colour!
If your bonsai are looking a little tired and need advancement, rather simply buying yet another tree, why not get the help of a professional to really transform what you already have. I think all enthusiasts leave the sessions extremely happy with how their tree(s) have improved for further than they thought was possible.
With the cost of living in the UK hitting everyone, attendance at the workshops has fallen from the maximum of 12 to just 6, but this means that everyone who can still attend gets twice as much work done in their trees. The next workshop is on October 14th, followed by another on November 18th. To book a spot, please visit the Bonsai4me.com/store
