Dr Karen, Nino and myself in Ireland during August 2023.
Welcome to the September edition of the Bonsai4me Newsletter.
During August I had the pleasure of meeting up with long time Bonsai4me designer Nino Pirs in Ireland where we were busy making plans for future projects this Winter.
Nino is the man behind laying-out and printing each of my books as well as each new edition over the past 13 years and has also had his hand in everything from logos to T-shirt designs.
He is now living here in Ireland and is taking on new projects for this winter including further development of the website and the next book.
We also had the pleasure of a visit from Dr Karen who is of course the person behind probio_carbon and the new cutting edge of bonsai and plant care with her Danu and Maru microbes.
We’ll see Karen in the uk soon at the forthcoming 12th UKBA Heathrow Bonsai Show at Bracknell Sunday, 1st Oct 2023
Dr Karen has bought me the news Danu and Maru liquids have completely sold out until December. As well as an ever-growing popularity of the microbes in bonsai here in Europe, they are now being extensively used in the US via the likes of Ryan Neil and Todd Schlaffer.
Fortunately Dr Karen is putting together a huge new brew at the University this Autumn and will have new stock available from December onwards, ready for the recommended annual ‘topping up’ of microbes in February-March.
Pre-orders for bottles of Danu and Maru can be made from this October on the Bonsai4me.com/store.
For those that are quick, there are a few bottles of Maru left in stock at the store and we have plenty of Dried Danu available.
The dried Danu does not give as good coverage as the liquid but is still sufficient to introduce microbes into the soil of approx 20-30 trees. However, we wait for new stock of Danu liquid to arrive, packs of the Dried Danu have been temporarily reduced from £21.50 to £16.00

Bonsai Soils
With some regret, I have decided not to supply bonsai soils this winter/spring. A combination of ever-increasing wholesale prices, very slow delivery from the continent and a lack of space has meant that it is not feasible for me to offer soils in the foreseeable future. |

Workshops and 1:2:1's
I am no longer offering 1:2:1 sessions in my garden. Despite working long hours, it’s just not possible for me to offer this service with so many other projects on the go.
However, the vast majority of the time, those wishing to have trees worked and/or needing tuition would be much better served by attending our workshops that also cost a fraction of the price of a 1:2:1.
Finally, I have dates and the listings for the autumn workshops that are now available on the Bonsai4me.com/store with bookings available on a first-come-first-served basis.
The dates are:
WORKSHOPS
Saturday 16th September 2023
Saturday 14th October 2023
Saturday 18th November 2023
Saturday 16th December 2023
I will be assisted by apprentice Sean Stolp and Syed Ali Abbass who are both well know and respected; we should also have newcomer Toby Wilson helping us out as well. Toby is extremely good at getting wire on as are Sean and Syed, so we really can cater to anyone wanting there trees styled though the day!
We’re now at workshops 24-28 here in Aylesbury, and they’ve always been a great success with a lovely mix of enthusiasts attending from throughout the country. If you’re interested in coming down, having your tree(s) worked on in a very informal and friendly atmosphere, please visit Bonsai4me.com/store

Japanese White Pine bonsai over rock, seen at Beechfield Bonsai in August |
Repotting and feeding pines, junipers and Spruce in September.
September is still an ideal time for repotting most coniferous species in the uk with cooler nights but plenty of root activity in our trees until late October.
I have been busily repotting the pines in my garden since August 1st given how relatively cool it has been and as ever, I expect no problems from the trees that have been worked.
Don’t forget to feed your coniferous trees hard at this time of year.
In order to ensure shorter needles in my pines, I don’t feed them from candle extension in May/June, but once the new growth has hardened, feeding heavily with a good organic fertiliser ensures strength and vigour in the bonsai, and increases the production of new buds for next year.

Doncaster Bonsai Experience
September sees the welcome return of the Doncaster Bonsai Experience. The Show quality in February was fantastic and I fully expect another blinding display of trees alongside literally over a 100 traders.
Doncaster has quickly grown into a must-see event!
Bonsai4me will of course be there and we will be offering a range of books, fertilisers, ProBio Carbon products and trees for sale. Note that we will be offering a 10% discount on all trees purchased at the event itself so come and find us!

The UKBA Heathrow Bonsai Show
Slightly further ahead, we have the infamous Heathrow Bonsai Show. Now held in Bracknell, for over a decade this has been the leading club show and attracts dozens of Bonsai Club displays alongside many traders.
This is absolutely worth attending for a huge number of friendly bonsai enthusiasts who attend from throughout Great Britain.
The Bonsai4me team will be trading there and we will be joined by Dr Karen O'Hanlon from ProBio_Carbon in Ireland. |
